Goose Island Pepe Nero

So, this beer has a very complex (but light) herbal thing (with brett!) going on upfront, then a bit of sizzle in the middle, then some nutty chocolate cake at the back. And then it comes back with something bready and sweet as it lingers on the palate.

And I can't really describe *any* of it; it utterly blows my mind (and ability to describe flavors). Highest rating ever, go buy 10 bottles RIG

Cascade Saison 10

A simply amazing concoction - an aged saison. The aging adds sweet malt on the intro, and a crisp hop burn at the outro, and everything is balanced oh so perfectly. It doesn't get much better than this.

Lagunitas Wilco Tango Foxtrot

A dark dark dark red; the label calls it a black and a red - which equals brown. However, it actually *is* a mixture of a red, with the nutty and powerful hops, and the black (i.e. porters) with the thick, almost coffee-like mouthfeel and coffee-bitter (as opposed to the citrusy hops-bitter) aftertaste. Every time I try it I'm hard-pressed to describe the deliciousness - but it *is* delicious. Wil

Lagunitas Maximus

They call this an IPA, an IPA with an 8.6% alcohol level. Amusingly, it tastes a lot like the Full Sail Boardhead Barleywine - which I noted for being greatly IPAish. It's full of delicious honeylike malts with a well-accompanied bite of hops on the tail end. For an IPA, it's surprisingly thick, too; I would definitely label this an imperial or a double - but whatever the name is, it is delicious.

Goose Island Demolition

A tangy and tart Belgian-style golden ale that has a bit of that farmhouse ale flavor and lightness but with ample more going on to keep you interested. A fantastic, rounded beverage.

Full Sail Imperial Porter

I don't even know where to start with this; it is simply a quintessential porter. I am not sure what makes it Imperial - wait, let me check alcohol level - enh, 7.5%, nothing huge. Deep coffee roast flavors, rich hops blending with mild malts - it just doesn't get much better than this.

Stone Old Guardian

This is another in the "what exactly *is* an american style barleywine" series. As such, it does quite well in a "whack you upside the head" sort of way. It delivers a truly massive payload of hops, followed by a massive payload of honey-like sweetness; the two have a party in your head and before you know it, you're asking for more.

Not the most subtle nor nuanced of barley

Great Divide Grand Cru

A potent dark belgian style ale, this is like a spiced wine of beers. At 11% it might as well be wine, come to think of it. While good and quite drinkable, it weighs in a bit heavily on the malts with nothing to counterbalance it. Would drink again, but not ahead of, say, making a mulled wine myself!

Weihenstephan Dunkel Hefeweiss

So there was a recent article about the slump in German breweries that was a bit revelatory - turns out German brewers are basically prohibited with experimenting with beers if they want to stay legal (or some such thing). Only recently has that been relaxed so that other styles and methods can be tried. Anyway, that made me want to try some so I went and looked at the shelves and ... sure enough,

Lagunitas GnarlyWine

Fantastic brew. Appropriately thicker and sweeter in barleywine style, but uncompromising in its use of potent hops. Said hops kick in immediately and fade to nutty toffee and a lingering bitterness. This is another of those "This could be an imperial IPA" types, although considerably thicker and sweeter - an imperial imperial IPA, perhaps?

Dogfish Head World Wide Stout

Whoah. This isn't beer - this is beer port. In the same way that port says "hello" through the nose first, this likewise should be partaken of in a snifter to fully appreciate the boozy (yes, boozy) aromas of fruit and coffee that arise from the brew's surface. After it wallops you with that, it goes down amazingly smoothly - almost like a porter and not a stout - and only then does your

Saison Dupont

Finally, I gave this classic belgian farmhouse ale a shot - and it is everything I hoped. A zesty, refreshing golden Belgian brew but without the sweetness or lightness of Duvel. It doesn't get much better than this.

Don't get me wrong, I love Duvel; but this is perfectly balanced in a slightly different and just as delicious way.

Anchor Old Foghorn

Another in my attempt to give barleywines another shot. In this case it fails, but only because it's a more classic type of that ale - thicker, sweeter, slightly more cloying and with only a hint of hoppiness that feels half-assed (I blame being in the oh-so-hoppy Pacific North West . I won't be coming back to this one, even though there's nothing wrong with it ... if you like that sort of thing.

Full Sail Old Boardhead Barleywine

This is a fantastic Imperial Double IPA (extremely strong hops!) that someone mistakenly put a "barleywine" label on. Powerful strong hops from the start, tiny bit of honey sweetness that any decent IPA aspires to in the middle, and a bitter finish. A tasty brew - just not a barleywine in the least.

North Coast Old Stock

Ever since HUB's Floggin' Noggin' barleywine turned out to be full of deliciousness, I've been wanting to try out some of the old standby breweries' barleywines that I've been avoiding until now. This is another one - however, it is a more classic barleywine with much fuller malts, a hefty and thick mouthfeel and a strong aftertaste of sticky honey. Well, maybe not quite so thick as I'm making it

Bridgeport Kingpin

A Double Red that upon first tasting on tap was only average, but in the bottle, surprisingly tasty! It's the quintessential PNW red, with strong hops coming through first and remaining on your tongue throughout, and light caramel, rye and pepper dropping by briefly to say hi and then taking off. Very quaffable: in fact, I wish the flavor notes were a bit stronger but then it'd be a different beer

Hair of the Dog Santa Claws Barleywine

This is the second barleywine we risked after having a sample of the Floggin' Noggin' at HUB and finding it delicious. Previous barleywine experiments were ... not so great - way too much sweetness and cloying sugar. This one however is a fantastic brew, with the fresh sweetness of spring flowers and honey combined with the potent PNW hop flavor of a double IPA. The combination just works.

North Coast: Red Seal Ale

A good balance between the red malt and the hoppy IPA - a good northwestern red, but nothing outstanding. I expected a little more from North Coast, but it's only because they are typically so awesome that this one is a little light. Any other brewery would be proud to call this a flagship ale.

Deschutes Abyss

A wonderfully thick and chunky liquid chocolate and nut. The taste spreads through your mouth until you swallow, but after you do it turns surprisingly hoppy and bitter.
